Asbestos is a dangerous mineral. It is fibrous and flame retardant, so it has been used as an insulator in buildings. The market for asbestos no longer exists in western countries because the same fibers turned out to be deadly, causing lung cancer. Most of the people who worked with the substance died horrible deaths. Asbestos has not been used in North America in over thirty years.

Today, Canadians who work with the material dress up like astronauts to protect themselves. Canada's main export markets are India and China, where it is used in housing.

Canada's trade in asbestos should be illegal.
